CASE STUDY 6
Salary Sacrifice – Pensions for a Major UK Retail Company
The retail company had both a defined contribution and a defined benefits scheme used within its retail and wholesale businesses. Significant savings in respect of National Insurance contributions could be achieved for many employees as well as the employer.
The scheme was introduced at the same time as the move from a non contributory DB scheme to a contributory scheme and was part of the negotiations with the unions and the staff representatives.
Communications were developed for staff explaining the way in which salary sacrifice works and giving tools for employees to see what it would mean for them.
The scheme was implemented quickly and efficiently and approval sought from HMRC the month of go live providing examples of the Scheme rules and the pre and post salary sacrifice payslips for a sample of employees.
Savings were projected to be of the order of £1m per annum for the employer.
