TRAINING AUDITS
What is a Training Audit?
Training audits are a prudent periodic assessment of the adequacy of a company's training environment. The audit is a systematic way for management to ensure they are maximising their human resources, keeping them flexible, interested, valued and up-to-date. One of the most frequently cited reasons for resignations and under-performance is staff feeling they could be stretched more or be better utilised. Training is an investment in people and staff would prefer to be invested in and nurtured rather than taken for granted.
How Often Should You Do Training Audits?
For most businesses of any size, a yearly assessment would be the minimum period for an audit; often this can be in conjunction with an annual appraisal.. This can change depending upon the industry and how much upheaval there is within a given company. Where there are skill gaps or under-performing staff, an urgent, targeted review can be instigated to help redefine the training provision.
Set Training Goals
HR managers need to consider corporate aims and to understand where skill shortages exist or are likely to arise before assessing training. This can best be done through discussions with management to identify where problems are anticipated which training could address.
Who Should Do The Training?
An audit should assess how effective the current human resources are in meeting business aims and identify the types of training that could rectify the deficit. Only at this point can an assessment be made of whether resources exist internally to carry out that training. In most cases, outside training programmes can be contracted for, although many larger companies keep training as an internal function. Whoever provides the training, an assessment needs to be made of whether they are addressing the skills deficit in the best and most effective way.
